Neurobiology of Shame : the news is worse than you think and better than you can imagine

Presenter Information

Curt Thompson

Session Number

Breakout session #1

Location

Chase gymnasium

Description

Shame’s essential work is to—literally—disintegrate our minds while doing the same to our communities. It began in the Garden of Eden, and has continued right up to the writing of these words. What happens in and to the mind such that shame holds such a grip on our lives as individuals and institutions? Moreover, what can be done about it? This lecture will explore the nature of how shame is the vector that not merely disintegrates the mind; it extends to the entire creation through the multitude of human behaviors that are shaped by it. But the news, as bad as it is, is nothing compared to what it means that God has come to us in Jesus. For in the presence of one who never leaves—despite, in our shame, our reluctance to allow him to see us at times—we are given the opportunity not only to be made whole, but to have our minds renewed, changing our brains along the way.
