Presentation Title

Seen, Heard, and Held: Listening to Shame

Presenter Information

Betsy A. Barber, Biola University

Session Number

Breakout session #1

Location

Andrews Banquet Hall

Description

Shame, by its nature, shuts us down and renders us voiceless. Careful listening, by its nature, opens us up and we find our voices again; and therefore, healing becomes possible. Come and learn some beginning skills to be a careful listener who helps others heal.

Barber shared three main skills of listening: attending - paying attention to the other person and letting yourself wonder about them.

The second skill of inviting - asking who, what, where, when, and how questions

The third skill of responding - this step requires the listener to contemplate upon the information being shared means to the other person and what they feel about it.
