Ah! Whither could we flee for aid, When tempted, desolate, dismayed. Or how the hosts of hell defeat, Had suffering saints no mercy seat?-An Old Hymn.; The mercy seat was the cover of the "ark of the covenant" which reposed in the "holy of holies," or inmost room of the tabernacle. Once in the year, on "yom kippur," or day of atonement, the high priest entered to sprinkle the mercy seat with the blood of a goat. But our High Priest has once and forever sprinkled with His own blood the mercy seat on high, and has made for us an everlasting atonement.
